We hear about gun shootings and massacres now and then. But whenever those events happen in a school or a university, it deeply saddens us because the victims are usually students, the leaders of our future. Bad things still happen, though. In the memory of all victims in university shootings, we have compiled top 10 university shootings in United States.

10 Oikos University Shooting

It occured on April 2, 2012. Yes, very recently. Just 5 months ago, in fact. A gunman shot at people inside Oikos University which is a Korean Christian college in Oakland, California. Just within a few hours, the reported fatalities reached seven. One L. Goh, a 43-year old former student from the school was taken into custody and identified as the suspect. Along with California State University, Fullerton massacre, this was one of the three deadliest university shooting in U.S history. And it was also the deadliest gun violence at a U.S school since Virginia Tech massacre in 2007 in which 32 people were shot to dead. More info on Wikipedia

9 Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Shooting

A university police officer of the Virginia Tech Police Department, Deriek Wayne Crouse, was shot to dead by 22-year-old Ross Truett Ashley, a student from nearby Radford University. The incident took place at a traffic stop in the Cassell Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall. Ashley was actually not in any cars of the traffic stop in which Deriek Crouse was engaged. After the shooting, Ashley fled on foot to another parking lot named the "Cage", where his body, along with a discharged weapon was found shortly after that. 8 2010 University of Alabama in Huntsville Shooting

On February 12, 2010, three people were killed and three more were wounded in a shooting at University of Alabama in Huntsville. A biology professor named Amy Bishop abruptly stood up and shot people in the meeting, which was just a routine meeting of the biology department. 12 individuals were there, and 3 closest to her were immediately killed. Under Alabama state law, she coudl be eligible for the death penalty if found guilty. This is not the only violence case with her, actually. She drew the attention of police before in 1986 when she shot her brother to death in Massachusetts, which was later ruled as an accident. In 1993, she and her husband were questioned in a pipe-bomb incident as well. More info on Wikipedia

7 Virginia Tech Massacre

Virginia Tech Massacre was one of the deadliest event among all, among all university shootings in United States history. It happened on April 16, 2007. Seung-Hui Cho, a student of the university, went on rampage killing mood and killed 32 people, and wounded 17 others in two separate attacks. 6 more people were injured as they had to escape by jumping out of the classroom windows. The attacks were about two hours apart, and he killed himself afterwards. In U.S history, this massacre is the deadliest incident by a single gunman, and only second deadliest in the world. 6 San Diego State University Shooting

The incident took place at the San Diego State University engineering building on August 15, 1996. A masters degree student Frederick Martin Davidson shot and killed three professors. He was 36-year-old mechanical engineering graduate student and he was to defend his master's thesis in front of his graduate advisor and two other faculty members. After investigations, it's found out that Davidson actually hate the three professors for various unfounded reasons. Police also found out that he made advance plans for shooting by slipping into the room where he was supposed to defend his thesis, and hid his handgun and extra magazines. More info

5 University of Iowa Shooting

On November 1, 1991, a 28-year-old former graduate student named Gang Lu killed four members of the university faculty and one student, and severly wounded another student and killed himself afterwards. Lu was a physics and astronomy student and he also received his doctoral degree from the university in May, the same year. Lu was infuriated because his dissertation didn't receive D.C. Spriestersbach Dissertation Prize and he also believed that winning it will ensure his chance to become a professor at the university. Among the four faculty members, one was Lu's former roommate and winner of Spriesterbach award. More info on Wikipedia

4 Mid-Atlantic Christian University Shooting

Jonathan Schipper, a student at Mid-Atlantic Christian University was shot to dead in the room of Christopher David Amyx, 23, who was also arrested for murder. Amyx was an Auxilary Police Officer for a nearby police station, and he used the gun issued for his work. Schipper was shot in the head with a semi-automatic gun, and the motives are still unknown although Amyx said that it was self-defense. More info

3 San Jose State University Shooting

It looks like this incident is jealousy-fueled domestic violence that got out of control. 25-year-old Marcory Tarlit Caliguiran and her classmate Thomas Kyle Williams, 26, were shot to dead at the parking garage by Caliguiran's husband Napoleon Lavarias Caliguiran, 54. He shot himself after fatally shooting the poor girl and Williams as the two sat in the Caliguirans' Mercedes-Benz. The indicators are clear. Napoleon must had thought or actually had proof that his wife is having a love affair with Williams, and decided to end it by ending their lives. Although we could understand his anger, we just couldn't make sense of his pathetic behavior. More info

2 Appalachian School of Law Shooting

The Appalachian School of Law is an American Bar Association accredited private law college in Grundy, Virginia. On January 16, 2002, a former student named Peter Odighizuwa, 43, killed three people and wounded three more. He arrived to school campus with a handgun and opened fire. He first discussed his academic problems with Professor Rubin and told Rubin to pray for him. Then he returned to school at afternoon, and headed to the offices of Professor Thomas Blackwell and Dean Anthony Sutin, where he shot them to dead with a semi-automatic handgun. The victims were shot at point blank range. A student named Angela Dales was also killed by him, for unknown reasons. When he left the building, two students with personal firearms and one unarmed student subdued him and arrested him, and called for police. More info on Wikipedia

1 Delaware State University Shooting

On September 21, 2007, an 18-year-old student of Delaware State University Loyer D. Braden shot and killed two 17-year-old students from the same university. One of the victims, Shalita Middleton, died 32 days later since she sustained critical injuries. Braden actually came back into his dorm room the next day, probably thinking he could get away with this. But police arrested him in his dorm on September 24, 2007 for first-degree murder. More info

We compiled this list with much sadness, and in memory of all the victims in the incidents listed above. Our heart and wishes go out to the families of the victims and everyone who suffered from the attacks. We do hope and wish that such horrifying incidents will never happen in future, especially on students.
